end of an era

this is the last of the kid art pages i scanned. it's a good one to end on, as it sums up my entire childhood pretty well.

(no explanation for the octopus arms i seem to be sporting.)

$80 OBO

it's been twenty years and no takers. i'm thinking about moving my listing over to craig's list.

what's on the tube?

i have a theory about what's happening here.

1) notice how leonardo (blue bandanas) is knocked down, defeated (and possibly bleeding to death). notice how the purple figure has odd markings on his lower face. notice the indistinct gray object at his side.

i believe this to be based on the final battle scene on the rooftops in the first live-action ninja turtles movie, in which shredder removes his mask to reveal the scars given to him by splinter years before. moments before, shredder has defeated leonardo, pinned him to the ground and threatened his life.

2) bebop and rocksteady are erroneously included, as they never appeared in a live-action film.

return of the weequay

a little bit of "return of the jedi" practice for a flyer i'm supposed to be working on. speaking of "supposed to be working," please do not steal company secrets from the background if you work for a competitor.

cowabunga, a pizza truck!

according to this journal entry, i took a turn toward inactivity, moving from "played" ninja turtles to "watched" ninja turtles. apparently, however, i didn't watch closely enough to wrap my head around the ins and outs of shredder's costume.

this illustration is unique in that i actually know exactly which episode of the cartoon it's based on. thanks to a burger king promotion, my family owned a VHS tape of "sky turtles," in which gravity is reversed, causing buildings to break apart and float away (pictured), so the turtle boys were forced to take to their personal blimp.

thanks to the VHS tape, making ninja turtles available 24 hours a day, i experienced more viewings of "sky turtles" (along with the BK promo where KidVid walks off the drafting table) than any other episode.

splash page

continuing ninja turtle week:

there's a lot going on here, much of it indiscernible, but among the recognizable artifacts are: bebop, nun-chucks and skateboards.

record keeping

thanks to my kindergarten teacher's fine penmanship, i'm now able to report that this drawing was made when i was exactly five years, ten months, and twenty-one days old.

and yes, they DID wear colored bandannas on their knees and elbows.

unknown soldier

probably the very first time i ever tried to draw camouflage. i like to think this was meant to be either dusty or ambush, but i have no way of knowing. the other guy is a green-haired mystery.

M.A.S.K.

this is how much i loved toys: these were drawn from memory when i was five. no one seems to remember these as well as i do. i didn't even own any, just admired them from afar.

pictured: condor with brad turner figure, hurricane with hondo maclean figure.
(it took some creative web research to track down all those names.)

also check out the cartoon theme.

possibly my first graphic novel:

fun racers: a ___ book.
i dedicate this book to P.J.
by matt h.

crash! james crashed.
pop! ___ pops a tire.
Yay, P.J. wins!

these need a lot of work, but at least i'm still actively working toward a goal:

the early years

this weekend i went through a whole lot of old schoolwork and drawings that my mom had saved for me from my elementary school days. all this week i'll be posting some the the best finds.

to begin, here's a little evidence that my life has always revolved around the same things:

outback and michelangelo

seem familiar?
